Intel may be looking at bringing its Atom processor to some non-netbook laptops, but it looks like it’s also planning to venture into some slightly more profitable territory, with CNET reporting that the company is on track to release a new Core-architecture processor for ultra-thin laptops later this year. That processor would apparently be priced well above the low-cost Atom, but below the likes of the Core 2 Duo “S” processor used in current ultra-thin laptops like the MacBook Air and Voodoo Envy 133. Unfortunately, Intel doesn’t seem to be quite ready to get much more specific than that, with it only saying that the processor could be used in laptops that are less than one inch thick, and that the processor itself would measure just 22 x 22-millimeters. As CNET points out, that pretty much places the processor squarely in competition with AMD’s new Athlon Neo, which is also going after that same, presumably more profitable middle ground.

We’ve already seen an early version of Windows 7 installed on a MacBook Pro, but with a brand new, more widely available beta now flooding the internets, there’s no doubt quite a few more folks ready to give it a try themselves and, naturally, some have already done just that. Thankfully, there’s also some how-tos starting to pop up, and it looks like the entire process is relatively painless, albeit still entirely at your own risk. Hit up the link below for one fairly straightforward walkthrough, and head on past the break for a video of the latest beta in action on a unibody MacBook Pro.

Viliv S7 hands on and VAIO P comparo

As promised, we’ve made a run over to check out Viliv’s forthcoming S7 netbook tablet, bringing along the ever-popular VAIO P to see how the two stack up (as well as an Eee 1000H for good measure). As you can see, the S7 actually isn’t that much more massive than the Sony, maybe 30 percent thicker and a little bit wider, but also a bit shorter. The thing manages to find room for a track pad on top of the keyboard, but it’s an awfully small one, so thank goodness for the (non-multi) touch screen. Also small is that keyboard, which is one of the most painful we’ve yet experienced on a netbook, featuring arrow and punctuation keys that even a pygmy would fat-finger. But, compromises must be made when making machines small, and small this one is. Viliv has written a custom skin that overlays the Windows XP install, demonstrated in a video below. It’s reasonably pleasant to use (minimizing the need to rely on that little trackpad), but is also simple to exit if you’re not feeling it. We already know the specs of this tiny convertible, so the only mysteries left are “when” followed immediately by “how much.” The answers we received to those questions are unfortunately a bit vague: “before this summer” and a rather predictable “less than the VAIO P.” We’re guessing it’ll be a lot less. Oh, and for those analyzing the gallery, don’t worry about the rough edges you might spy: this is a pre-production S7, so things should be a good bit more polished when it hits retail.

It looks like ASUS is about to carve out another unexpected niche for itself with its Eee Top all-in-one Personal computer. The 15.6-inch touchscreen coupled with ASUS’ touch-friendly user interface (riding an XP / Atom N270 underpinning) and industrial design definitely looked and felt like a winner. Sure, the UI could use some more polish, and the occasional menu pull-out was positioned too close to the bezel’s edge for simple touching. But we could easily see an Eee Top making its way into our lair as a secondary Computer when it begins shipping Stateside in “a few weeks” — especially for a $599 MSRP.

For $300 or less on eBay, you could buy a Shigeru Miyamoto signed pure white Nintendo DS. According to the seller, the console “itself has never been used (and notes that Pure White was available for sale only in Japan.)” Auction page. Click here for first picture in gallery.

On the E3 convention in Los Angeles 2005 I had the crazy luck of winning this Nintendo DS signed by one of the greatest (if not the greatest) videogame personality in the world, Mr. Shigeru Miyamoto himself!
