Remember those sub-$100 Coby netbooks that we deemed a hoax? Well, it looks like they might not be as hoax-y as we originally thought. Here at CES, Coby has a bunch of base models on the show floor in a myriad of color combos. The rep who showed us around made it clear that this was a “market research project” but that the ‘books would ring in at under $200. There were a bunch of different configurations, but nothing too different from the usual Atom setup. The six color offerings might pique your interest, but after playing with them for a few minutes, we don’t know how eager we’d be to run out and pick one up — they felt pretty low-end. However, the only way to differentiate oneself in the crowded netbook market is with price, and Coby certainly has that working for it. We’ll see if these ever make it to market, and reserve final judgment until then. Check out the non-junky gallery below.

Well, what have we here? While waltzing about the CES floor this day, we stumbled upon a conceptual Mio MID that looks suspiciously like Sony’s VAIO P. The currently unnamed device was actually lookin’ pretty sharp, as it boasted a 7-inch WVGA (800 x 480) resolution display, integrated WiFi, a non-removable battery good for eight hours or so and a full QWERTY keyboard. It was also packing a trackball setup, an SD card slot, a few USB ports and audio in / out. We were told that the design was still being finalized and that it wouldn’t ship until mid-2009 at the earliest, and while we’d love to see this piece ship Stateside, we have our doubts. Oh, and did we mention that this thing runs on an evidently skinned version of Windows Mobile? Because it does. Peek the gallery below if you’re in disbelief.

MSI’s Wind U100 had a good run, but now it’s time for the U120 to take over. We caught wind of this one just a few days back, but once the show floor opened we were finally able to feast our eyes on one. We’ve gotta state — it looks mighty good, so feel free to have a look in the gallery below to see if you concur.

While most folks will apparently have to wait at least a few more weeks to get their hands on a six-cell battery for their HP Mini 1000, Xavier Lanier of Notebooks.com was able to snag one a tad early and, whilst he was showing off the stash of gadgets hidden in his Scott eVest, he gave everyone a little glimpse of it. As you can sort of see above, it expectedly adds a bit of bulk to the otherwise slim Mini 1000, but we’re guessing that’s a more than acceptable trade-off for those craving some extra runtime. Still no word on a price or exact release date just yet, unfortunately, but those details should be popping up before too long. Hit up the link below for the full, slightly less blurry video.

Android shows up on X200, caught on video

It seems like Google’s Android has a bad case of wanderlust, spreading its wings and making appearances on all sorts of devices after Mobile-facts showed it could be done. The tiny green guy quickly headed over to HP’s Mini-Note 2133, and now we’ve got footage of it in the wild, installed on a Lenovo X200. The machine goes from a cold boot to UI in a solid 25 seconds, and while we still don’t think the resulting interface is exactly keyboard and mouse friendly, we’re excited to see what the future holds for our favorite synthetic life form/operating system.

[Thanks, Jayanth]

ViewSonic has just introduced a new computing line geared towards the netbook / nettop set. All three Atom-based machines sport Windows XP Home, a 1.6GHz processor, 1GB RAM and 160GB storage. VieBook is a 10.2-inch netbook with all the usual connectivity options and an MSRP of $429. The VPC100 ViePC is an all-in-one device, measuring a mere 35mm thin, with an 18.5-inch, 16:9 aspect ratio LCD screen and should be priced at $549. Rounding up the lineup, the LinkPC is a nettop, designed to be strapped to the back of any VESA compatible monitor, and has an MSRP of $399. The latter becomes available sometime in March, while the other two will be doing their thing in February.

Got an itch for a gaming laptop that’s large enough to span the laps of both you and your lover? ASUS has you covered. Here in the desert, the outfit has introduced a potent 18.4-inch gaming rig with a 1080p panel, twin ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2 GPUs, three RAM slots (a world’s first, mind you) stuffed with 6GB of DDR2 memory, a Core 2 Duo processor, a half dozen (seriously) Altec Lansing speakers and a Turbo Gear function that’ll enable users to overclock the system and boost performance by as much as 25%. A few more configurations are available, including one with a 17-inch panel, an NVIDIA graphics option, dual HDDs, an optional Blu-ray drive and enough ports to put your average desktop to shame.

What’s up with companies suddenly not wanting to call their netbooks, um, netbooks? Sony’s Mike Abary sat down with LaptopMag in order to discuss the VAIO P, and as always, the company didn’t hesitate to shoot off a few more-than-controversial tidbits. For starters, Mr. Abary insinuated that the 8-inch machine wasn’t actually a good fit for the netbook category, noting that “the type of premium customer it is targeting probably doesn’t even know what a netbook is.” Furthermore, he reckoned that around 60% of prospective VAIO P buyers would be women, and it doesn’t view 12-inch laptops as a threat. If you’re hungry for even more one-liners that you can jump all over, head on down to the read link — just remember, yelling at your LCD doesn’t do anyone any good.

NVIDIA announces new GeForce chipsets for laptops, starts selling GTX 295s for desktops

Spare a thought for NVIDIA’s GeForce 9M series of laptop GPUs, just announced this past summer and already being put to pasture by the newly announced G100M series. The first trio of members for the club are the G105M, G110M, and GT 130M. The G105M is intended to replace the 9200M GE and scores a 2177 in 3DMark Vantage compared to 1391 for the old one — a tidy 56 percent boost. Meanwhile the G110M supersedes the 9300M GS, scoring 2481 and beating its predecessor by 35 percent, and the GT 130M beats the old 9600M GT’s score by 17 percent. The chips are in production now and will be featured in Lenovo’s upcoming Y-series laptops. Meanwhile, for those looking for a tiny boost at home, EVGA’s version of the GTX 295 is now available for buy — if you have a spare $510 lying around.

Update: Sean just commented to let us know that there are other 295 flavors now available as well, some for a penny under $500.

[Thanks, Sean]

We’ve been somewhat charmed by the Vivienne Tam-styled HP Mini 1000 for some time now, but today on the floor at CES we got our first in-person look at the teeny fashion “clutch,” as it were, and have to state that in person it’s pretty good looking. The 10-incher’s got a fiery design plus a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom with 1GB of RAM, and an up to 60GB hard drive. We were particularly enamored with that silver mesh hinge. It’s defintely a fashionable item — and if that’s what you’re into it’s got a starting price of $699. Check a gallery of this gal (and it’s matching mouse!) after the break.
