Rumors are swirling about Intel’s roadmap of forthcoming netbook and handheld processors, which apparently showed up in a current report by UBS. The roadmap seems to confirm the previously seen Pineview, and codenames its successor “Medfield,” which is to be built on 32-nanometer process technology. Pineview, after some speculation, seems to have been nailed down as a 45-nanometer chip, and will be released in 2009, while Medfield, a complete system-on-chip, will follow in 2010. Medfield will have two variants, one for netbooks rumored to use the current integrated GPU, and one for MIDs, which is said to carry a PowerVR graphics core like the one used in the iPhone. Intel has apparently confirmed the codename “Medfield,” but, when questioned, wouldn’t answer to allegations that the person who’d come up with the moniker had been fired on grounds of being the least creative namer in the history of naming.

We knew good and well HP’s Mini 1000 netbook had a thing for integrated 3G, but we never knew it played both sides of the proverbial field. After noticing not two, but three WWAN options on the CTO pages at HP, jkOnTheRun wrote in to figure out what was going on. In sum, those uncomfortable with choosing a dedicated AT&T or Verizon WWAN module can opt for an substitute that handles both networks — and at no extra cost. HP has confirmed that the $199 option is indeed the two-faced Qualcomm Gobi, which theoretically grants you to use mobile broadband services from AT&T and Verizon if you happen to either relocate or have subscriptions with both. Now, if only the WWAN option wasn’t >50% of the buy price, we might actually think about it.

Looking for the ultimate in nerve-shatteringly cheap cheapo netbooks? Don’t want to break the $200 price point? Introduce yourself to the Alpha 400 — a little “computer” with about as much processing power as your last TI scientific calculator. The miniature laptop sports a 400MHz (megahertz!) MIPS CPU, 128MB (megabytes!) of RAM, a mind-blowing 1GB (gigabyte!) of flash storage, 802.11b (b!), a 7-inch “display,” and support for SD cards up to 32GB (gigabytes!). Seriously, this thing is essentially a glorified pocket dictionary, but who are we to question its awesome $189.95 price tag? Oh wait, we’re Engadget. Yeah, we don’t suggest this.

Zepto’s been progressively taking its notebooks down in size for a tiny bit now, and while the 14-inch Nox A14 is certainly portable, the Notus A12 takes things a step or two further by squeezing a full-fledged personal into a chassis barely more massive than… an ink pen, or something like that. Anywho, the 12.1-inch machine packs a WXGA (1,280 x 800) panel, 800MHz Intel processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, an 80GB 4,200RPM hard drive, gigabit Ethernet, WiFi and the usual array of ports for €1068.59 ($1,360). Those scouting for a bit more oomph can certainly get that for a few more bills, but the real kicker here is the five to ten hours of battery life. ‘Course, actually achieving those figures could be a challenge.

[Thanks, Jamil]

It’s not like (PRODUCT) RED versions of Windows Vista haven’t been shipping on associated systems for months now, but for those who’d like to keep the rig they’ve and just get a colorful / charitable upgrade to Microsoft’s latest OS, this is for you. Listed on the official (PRODUCT) RED website and up for pre-order now at Amazon, the special edition of Windows Vista Ultimate is slated to ship on December 15th. There’s not too many extras here to make you splurge for a second copy (a few new wallpapers and a big warm, fuzzy feeling are definitely nice, though), but those looking to get a new OS and support the push to end AIDS in Africa can purchase in now for $219.95 ($64.95 for students).

At first glance, it may look like a real Nikon D700 camera, but it’s actually a cake. A husband gave his pic enthusiast wife this delectable treat and then followed up by giving her the actual camera. Click here for one more picture/

Sure, getting a D700 DSLR for your birthday is awesome, but I’m also jealous about the idea…how good it is. Backing up a huge gift with a cake like this is definitely going to be a home run.

Simply slot the holster on to a bottle of your favourite drink (it doesn’t matter if it’s a shot of whiskey you’re after, or just some tizer), then pump the pump-action lever to power up your Shots Gun.

The Jollbot basically “jumps in a similar way to the grasshopper, but uses electrical motors to slowly store the energy needed to leap in its springy skeleton.” Video after the break.

Before jumping, the robot squashes its spherical shape. When it is ready, it releases the stored energy all at once to jump to heights of up to half a metre.
