We’ve already heard about some of Intel’s future Atom plans, and heard just how little it’ll apparently cost the company to produce ‘em, but now thanks to a PDF kindly let loose by the chipmaker, we finally have some official word as to when we can actually expect to see ‘em. As UMPC Portal reports, the PDF released in conjunction with the currently-happening Intel Developer Forums indicates that the processor will get a worldwide launch this June, which is a tad later than some had expected. In related news, the PDF also mentions two Celeron processors intended for use with the same Diamondville platform that Atom uses, including the Celeron 220 and Celeron 440 (both Intel Core processors), though we somehow suspect those won’t generate quite the level of interest as the bargain basement Atom.
[Thanks, Steve]

Not too long ago, we gave you loyal Cloudbook owners a chance to voice your view on how you’d change things. Fast forward a few weeks, and take a gander at what Everex has put together. Debuting today at CTIA 2008, the Cloudbook MAX not only boasts an 8.9-inch WVGA (1,024 x 600) display, Windows Vista, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, integrated GPS receiver, 2-megapixel webcam and a battery good for four hours, but it also features an 80GB HDD, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, audio in / out and an S-Video output. Beyond all that, this thing gets energized by a 1.6GHz VIA C7-M ULV processor coupled with the VX800 digital media IGP chipset, which touts full DirectX 9 support and video acceleration for MPEG-2, MPEG-4, WMV9, VC1 and DivX video formats (plus a VMR-capable HD video processor, among other things). Lastly, the unit includes built-in support for Sprint’s XOHM WiMAX network. Brimming with excitement yet? Start stocking that piggy bank — this currently unpriced rig will be available in the latter half of this year across North America.

Dell reported an $11.6B profit last year, but the company apparently isn’t satisfied — it just announced a plan to shave off $3B in costs over the next three years. As you’d expect, it’s going to take a little more than off-brand soda and thrift store uniforms to achieve the sqeeze: 6,500 jobs are due to be eliminated (on top of 3,200 already cut) and a desktop manufacturing plant in Austin is scheduled to close as well. The big chunk, however, is going to come putting the squeeze on design, manufacturing, and logistics, as well as cutting component and material costs across all Dell product lines. That’s the part that has us a little worried, actually — we’re fans of new Dells like the XPS M1330, here’s hoping this doesn’t mean a return to beige boxes.

HP’s already jumped on board, and it looks like Qualcomm’s now also managed to convince Dell of the merits of its Gobi dual-3G chipset, which will soon be finding its way into a variety of Latitude, Precision, and other unspecified consumer laptops. For those not up to speed, that welcome addition will let you connect to both EV-DO and HSPA networks the world over without having to carry two different mobile broadband cards with you, with switching between the two as easy as flipping a software switch. Unfortunately, there’s no word on the exact models that’ll be getting the upgrade, nor is there any word on how much extra it’ll cost or exactly when it’ll be available, with Dell only going so far as to say that they’ll be available “later this year.”

Just in case a completely ho hum 17-incher wasn’t enough to keep your attention this morning, Toshiba is trumpeting its “design prowess” by introducing four “re-imagined” Satellites. As of today, the 13.3-inch U400, 14.1-inch M300, 15.4-inch A300 (pictured) and 17-inch P300 have all been ever-so-slightly refreshed with the outfit’s Fusion Finish, Feather-Touch multimedia keys, white LED accents and built-in Dolby Sound Room technology. Additionally, Tosh is unveiling its totally useful Sleep-and-Charge USB ports, which enable users to charge up their portable gadgetry via USB regardless of whether the laptop is powered on / off or in Sleep mode (so long as it’s tethered to an AC outlet, of course). Check out the gloating in full below.

Certainly not the first 17-inch Satellite to emerge from Toshiba’s lair, the L350 Series is aimed squarely at the budget set who still have a thing for screen real estate. The entire family packs a WXGA+ (1,440 x 900) resolution TruBrite panel, Vista Home, a dual-layer DVD writer, integrated WiFi and a built-in webcam with microphone. Based on model, you can also get up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM, a 200GB hard drive, GMA X3100 or ATI Radeon X1250 graphics set, three Sleep-and-Charge USB ports and your choice of an Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 or AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-60 CPU. If you haven’t already pieced it together, it’s not the specs list that’s impressive here — it’s the $749.99 starting price tag. You get what you pay for, you know.

There you’ve it, the first laptop we’ve seen running Intel’s long awaited Atom processors. We’re pretty sure that’s MSI’s Wind Computer on display in Shanghai for Intel’s Developer Forum. Of course, we’ve already seen Atom listed as the CPU in the G10IL and new 8.9-inch Eee Personal computer among others. But there’s nothing like seeing the genuine article running on Intel’s newest silicon. If you’re a fan of the Eee Computer form factor then you’ll be stoked by what looks like a truck-load of 7- to 9-inch ultra-portables on way. Click the read link to see a few more.

For those wondering when you’d see an all new Endeavor from Epson (yes, all six of you), the time has finally come. Astonishingly enough, the outfit’s latest 13.3-incher actually isn’t half bad, and comes equipped with such niceties as a WXGA panel, your choice of Windows XP / Vista, Intel’s 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo T8100, NVIDIA’s 256MB GeForce 8600M GT, up to 3GB of DDR2 RAM, between 80GB and 250GB of HDD space, a dual-layer DVD burner and integrated Bluetooth. You’ll also find gigabit Ethernet, WiFi, a trio of USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, VGA, an ExpressCard slot, a multicard reader and a battery good for around 3.4-hours on a full charge.
